    Page Formatting

    • The entire scholarly work must be double-spaced and formatted on pages that have 1-inch margins at the top, bottom, left and right. Times New Roman, 12 pt., is the font and size recommended by the APA. On the title page, a running header must be inserted flush left and page numbers beginning with "1" on the title page flush right. The remaining pages in the header show only the title of the paper in all capital letters flush left and the page number flush right. The words "Running head" should include both lowercase and capital letters, the title of the paper is in all capital letters and the two sections are separated by a colon. For example: Running head: TITLE OF YOUR PAPER.

    Parts of a Paper in APA Style

    • Assignments and written works require a title page showcasing the paper's title using upper and lowercase letters, the author and the attending institution. On page two, the abstract is a one-paragraph, concise summary of the paper's research, usually between 150 and 250 words. (See Reference 1.) The body of the paper includes the introduction, the research and findings and the conclusion. Use headings to better organize the paper for the reader. Vanguard University Department of Psychology suggests headings such as "Method, Results, Discussion, and References." (See Reference 3.) References are formatted on a separate page and are listed alphabetically by the author's last name using a hanging indent. Read your professor's requirements carefully as some instructors do not require an abstract or even a title page.

    Appendices, Figures and Tables

    • To present additional information used within the paper, the addition of a table, figure or appendix is necessary and organized after the written sections. Tables are methods to organize qualitative data formatted using double spacing and are flush left. Include a heading for the table that denotes the order of all tables. Figures are pictorial methods of presenting statistics, images or illustrations and include a caption beginning with "Figure 1" or the ordered number of the figures. Appendices are added when the inclusion of added descriptions, unpublished tests or stimulus materials are necessary. (See Reference 3.) All appendices, tables and figures begin on a new page and are double-spaced when applicable.

    Citations

    • Depending on the preferences of the instructor, in-text citations or footnotes must be included in the main body of the paper. Common in-text citations appear in parentheses before the sentence-ending punctuation mark. The author's last name and date of publication are included and separated by a comma. Endnotes or footnotes are a shortened version of the entry on the reference page and are noted in-text by a raised number connecting the sentence with the footnote. The reference section is its own page at the end of the document and lists the sources in alphabetical order. Each reference includes the author's name, date of publication, title, name of the journal or book and any electronic location.
