    Air Bags

    • A defect in the tie down-hooks of the 1995 Protege can cause the air bags to go off unnecessarily. Impacts to the undercarriage of the vehicle that are not from a collision can cause the air bags to deploy, which can cause personal injury to the front-seat occupants and increase the risk of a collision. Dealers will replace the defective tie-down hooks to eliminate the problem.

    Headlights

    • The wire leading from the light stalk on the steering column can become loose at the soldered connection with the headlight controls. The result of the loose wire is the headlights can suddenly turn off without warning to the driver of the vehicle, which can result in a vehicle collision. A Mazda dealer will make necessary repairs to the headlight switch to correct the problem.

    Headlight Assembly

    • Some headlight assemblies sold on 1995 Mazda Proteges that were manufactured by Sabersport do not conform to federal safety guidelines. The offending headlight assemblies lack the amber color lens on the side of the assembly. The absence of the amber lens can make it difficult for other drivers to see the driver of the Protege is signaling an upcoming turn, potentially resulting in a collision.

    Engine

    • A wire rod used to make the 1995 Protege engine valve springs was found to be defective. The valve springs can break while in operation, resulting in damage to the engine to the point it will no longer operate. Some cases of the vehicle stalling while operating have been reported, which can result in a collision. Dealers will replace all the valve springs in the engine free of charge.
