Home Grants for the Elderly
- Many local governments at the city level provide grants for elderly homeowners. Depending on the type, the money can be used to subsidize a mortgage or rent, or to make home improvements. In addition, organizations such as churches often provide funds to help the elderly stay in their homes or make necessary upgrades, such as wheelchair accessible ramps.
- Housing and Urban Development (HUD) offers home grants to facilities that house low income elderly people. The money can be used to acquire, construct, or refurbish such facilities.
- Public housing is offered through HUD. It allows elderly persons who meet certain low income limits to qualify for federally funded rental housing. The housing options vary by area, but can be anything from apartments specifically for the elderly to single family homes.
- Section 8 is a type of housing funding that provides a subsidy to people with very low incomes and the elderly. Those who qualify can select from privately owned rental housing options, and will pay no more of 30 percent of their income to the landlord.
- Under this program, the elderly may qualify for rental subsidies where they pay no more than 30 percent of their income for rent.
