As of now today increasing your link popularity is most important factor in getting higher ranking in major search engines like Google, Yahoo.
But building Reciprocal Linking is one of the tricky situations where you must be cautious otherwise it will harm your website badly.
Generally a good rule of thumb is to ask yourself "whether the site you want to exchange link with will be valuable for your readers too? If an answer to this question is yes then most likely Google will also like it.
Here are 7 tips which you must follow before exchanging link with any other site: 1) Do not link to a site that does not have similarity or same theme as of yours.
For example if you have a site on a topic "Gardening" then exchanging link with "Golf" topic site is not relevant.
2) Don't ever think of exchanging links with sites that have more than 30-40 links on their link pages, since your links will be very harder to find.
3) Avoid linking to a site that have link pages too deep and are very hard to find.
Some sites even link their link pages from home page so avoid linking with such sites.
4) Do not reciprocate with a site having Zero Page Rank value or less PR than yours.
However Reciprocating with few sites are OK but not in a large numbers.
5) Avoid sites that are involved in Link Farms and/or involved in poor linking strategy.
6) Do not link to directories that are haphazardly arranged with no proper categorization in their directory.
7) Last but not the least always navigate the site and ask yourself is the information provided by them will be valuable for your readers.
Are they providing enough content for your readers? Once after keeping all these points in mind if you found list of website to exchange links with then start emailing each webmaster one by one.
It's always better to put his website links first to your site and then asking them to do so.
Write a polite email to them explaining what your website offers and it will be valuable for both of yours site readers.
Tell them exact URL where you have placed their site links.
Always provide your Website URL, Title and description (pre-made html link to your site) in your reciprocal linking request letter so they can just copy and paste.
If your site is new then most likely you will not receive prompt response from webmasters since no website owners like to exchange link with sites that are too new.
If you don't get response in 5-7 days send another reminder.
If you didn't get reply within day or two just remove their link and move ahead for next link exchange.
One more thing to remember is always try to build natural link slowly and steadily.
