How to Use SDAIE Strategies for Kindergarten
- 1). The teacher should speak at a slow pace. Reminders should be placed in lesson notes to enunciate and speak clearly. Add intonation, pauses and volume to explanations. Simplify and rephrase the lesson. Also, cut the amount of time you spend talking, while encouraging the children to talk. This way they can put the English language into practice. Come up with activities to engage the children such as drawing, show-and-tell and games.
- 2). Use gestures and facial expressions. Act out the words and phrases. Give children non-verbal clues until they say the correct word or definition of the word. By acting out the words, children learn the emotion and physical expressions connected to the new word. Ask children to role play and use body movements for active learning as well.
- 3). Incorporate visuals into the lesson. Children may not understand an oral explanation of a term. Associate the word with a drawing or photograph. Have the children match the picture with the right word. Add diagrams and charts to the lesson.
- 4). Make sure the children understand the lesson before moving on. Use questions to gauge a child's understanding. Ask "yes" or "no" and "true" or "false" questions. Reiterate a concept if the child does not understand. Tap into a child's previous knowledge and connect it to the new concept.
- 5). Use cooperative learning. Help children to feel comfortable with making mistakes and using new language skills both in and out of the classroom environment. Positive association between the language and learning boosts a child's self confidence. Use group activities and learning for each child to practice new words in front of other students. Praise them for completing phrases and assignments in the group setting.
