How to Attach a Snaffle Bit
- 1
Hang up your bridle. This makes it easier to see if the bit is hanging correctly when it's attached. - 2
Bit in correct position.
Look at the bit you've chosen to determine the correct curvature of the bars of the bit. If your bit looks like the one in the picture below when you let the mouthpiece hang down naturally, it's turned correctly. - 3
Correctly attached bit.
Attach the bit so that the inside of the curvature is facing towards the corners of the horse's lips. (If the curve was a full circle, the inside would be the interior of the circle.) - 4
Incorrectly attached bit.
Fasten the cheek pieces around the bit rings, as shown. When spread out, the curvature of the bit will make a half-circle. If you realize after attaching the bit that it's turned wrong, take it off, turn it over and put it back on the bridle. - 5). Now attach the reins to the rings of the bit by placing them below the cheek pieces. If the reins are attached above the cheek pieces, your rein aids will be ineffective.
- 6). Put your horse's bridle on. Adjust the cheek pieces so that the bit pulls up two small wrinkles in each corner of your horse's mouth. Make sure the cheek pieces are even in length.
