  Resting in the eastern shadow of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in southeastern Colorado, Cuchara is on Colorado Highway 12, known as the Highway of Legends. Surrounded by the San Isabel National Forest, Cuchara's elevation is 8,470 feet. From there, the highway climbs southward to the 9,995-foot Cuchara Pass. Nearby are North Lake State Wildlife Area, Monument Lake Park and the 14,433-foot Mount Elbert. Tiny Cuchara offers lodging and gift shops, but most amenities are at La Veta, 13 miles north, which takes about 30 minutes to drive.
