How to choose a canoe outfitter on the Lower Wisconsin River
- 1). Check for company reviews posted on travel websites. Customer reviews will give you an idea of what kind of customer service you can expect and the professionalism an outfitter operates with.
- 2). Find out what kind of contact information is available to get in touch with the outfitter. The more options the better. Office phone numbers and email addresses are typical. If you're provided a driver's cell phone number or a direct line to a real person, you'll be better able to contact the outfitter if your canoe trip does not go according to plan.
- 3). Make sure the canoe you are provided is in good working condition and does not leak. Quality equipment is essential if you will be spending a day or more on the water. In addition, the vehicles used by the outfitter to transport you up or down the river should be comfortable---air conditioning will make the ride much more enjoyable on a muggy July afternoon.
- 4). Choose an outfitter with a reasonable rental rate. Some outfitters in areas like Prairie Du Sac (a popular starting point) will charge the most while just a few miles down the river you will find competitors with similar equipment up to 25 percent less expensive. Some companies will offer discounts for multi-day rentals or last minute deals on unrented canoes.
- 5). Contact the outfitter and secure your reservation. Most outfitters often sell out two to three weeks in advance during peak summer months.
