Avatars are there so you are able to easily identify the person if you are a Friend of theirs, or to let people know who they are and what they are about. Not having an avatar and having huge amounts of Friends and Followers may make you be labeled as a spammer, and you don't want that to happen. Put up a picture of what you're about. If you're about weight loss, put up a picture of a scale, or a picture pertaining to weight loss. Having a picture that will interest people will interest them to eventually follow you.

Backgrounds are the easiest way to let people know who you are. If they come and visit your profile, and they see a default or a badly designed background, they will just move on. You want to be able to communicate who you are, but keeping it in style. If you're a company, put your company's support or telephone numbers on the side with a nice picture of your logo beside it, so if a customer regularly checks your profile, they know the telephone numbers to contact, and they will definitely Follow you because of it. Having a nice background will attract more people and provide convenience to those who need more information.

Always fill your information in. Twitter didn't make a bio, a website, or any extra customization available just for you to leave it blank; having those blank just shows that you might be a person who was too lazy to fill those in, or a bot ( A.K.A. spammer ). That's the route you should never take. Always fill this information in, it only takes a minute or two and it could decide whether a person will Follow your or not.
