Toilet Training Resources
- A potty chair is a toddler-sized toilet that can be put into a bathroom next to a regular toilet. Because the potty chair is small, it's easy for a child to get on and off of. The child can feel safe on the potty chair while his mother, father or older sibling sits on the big toilet. Seeing someone use the toilet appropriately will inspire a child to use his potty chair correctly. The potty chair is also small enough the child will not fall in, a legitimate concern with using a regular toilet.
- Toddlers love stickers. They particularly love them as rewards. Buying a chart or creating one yourself is an excellent resource. It can be put up on the wall or on the refrigerator. Purchase stickers featuring gold stars, smiley faces or her favorite cartoon characters. Place a new sticker on the chart each time she sits on the toilet for a specified amount of time during the beginning of the training process; later, award the child a sticker for using the toilet.
- Potty training videos show animated characters or toddlers learning to use the toilet. Watch the potty training videos with your child. Discuss what is happening in the videos and point out how proud being able to go to the toilet makes the characters or toddlers in the video feel. Watch the video repeatedly. He will eventually want to do what the character in the video is doing. Potty training videos can be found at most libraries and are available at most retail stores.
- There are a number of picture books specifically designed for toddlers about toilet training. Read these books out loud to the child on a regular basis throughout the toilet training process. Also, while she is sitting on the toilet, give her the book to relax her and help her figure out what the toilet is for. Toilet training books can be found at most libraries and are available at most retail stores.
