Bacne Scar Removal
- A few types of laser treatments can remove acne scars on your back, or anywhere on your body. Non-ablative lasers remove scars by delivering laser light to the deeper layers of the skin structure, leaving the surface of the skin intact.
Fractional laser resurfacing is another effective way to remove body acne scars. Your doctor will use a laser that has a wavelength that can create vertical holes within your skin's tissue. After this tissue is destroyed, newer, scar-free skin begins to form.
With each type of laser therapy, patients often need up to three sessions to notice results. Laser therapy results in little to no downtime. - For mild acne scars on your back, a topical treatment such as Retin-A, glycolic acid or alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) may be effective. These treatments work by removing the top layer of your skin. Your skin texture will improve with continuous use of these products.
- For severe acne scars on your back or body, especially deep, pitted "ice pick" scars, your dermatologist may recommend punch excision. This procedure entails removing the area of skin that contains the scar, and either using stitches or skin grafts to renew the tissue.
Your dermatologist will administer a local anesthetic and use a punch biopsy tool to remove the scar and the surrounding skin. He will then suture your skin back together. The scar that results from this procedure usually fades after the treatment. If your back acne scars are very severe, your doctor may use a skin graft from another area of your skin to replace the skin he removed.
