The Ford Model A was the successor to the popular Ford Model T. Feeling the competition from other car manufacturers such as Dodge and Chevrolet, Henry Ford wanted the Model A to be about style. It debuted in 1927, and the new trim and bright paint made Model A's instantly popular. Ford built more than 1.5 million Model A's in 1929 alone. By the time the last Model A was delivered in 1932, close to 4 million had been made in various styles, including convertibles, trucks, station wagons and sedans. - The Model A engine had four cylinders and a single-barrel carburetor. It displaced 200.5 cubic inches and delivered a maximum 40 horsepower at 2,206 revolutions per minute. Maximum torque was 128 foot-lbs. at 1,000 rpm. The Model A had a standard, three-gear sliding transmission with a dry multiple-disc clutch. It had mechanical brakes and double-action hydraulic shock absorbers. The fuel tank held 10 gallons.
- Ford introduced two new Model A styles in 1929: the Town Sedan and the first station wagon made on an assembly line. Standard equipment included dash lights, mirror, windshield wipers, oil gauge, gasoline gauge, starter and speedometer. You could get the optional bumpers for $15.
- The price of Model A's ranged from $455 to $795. In 1929, Ford produced 1,507,132 Model A's in eight different styles. The standard coupe was the most popular, with 178,982 made. Ford produced just 3,510 station wagons, making it the least popular style.
