Co2 And The Copenhagen Summit In December
It was actually touted as the Hopenhagen Summit which was supposed to be the THE solution to global warming.
Instead, what happened? It turned out to be one of the worst CO2 events globally, producing mammoth amount of greenhouse gases. This eco summit didnt do much other than add to the annual carbon footprint.
This Shakespearian irony hasnt escaped anyone.
CO2 Gluttony at the Copenhagen Summit in December
According to a Reuters report, the amount of emissions The Copenhagen Summit in December produced can
- Fill 10K Olympic sized swimming pools to the brim
- Be equal to the annual carbon footprint of more than half a million Ethiopians
- Create 46K tonnes of CO2 as a result of 18K people representing 200 countries. These people have taken flights to reach the Summit, and have required hotel accommodation, transport within the city, they have consumed electricity and heating. In addition to this, these people have required the usage of paper and photocopiers, computers and printers, security and surveillance, support services and so on.
I think I could have found some excuse or another to justify these high costs if I saw that The Copenhagen Summit in December achieved something, anything. If I saw countries arriving at a consensus, if I saw commitments being made, if I saw some seriousness and some degree of progress being made, even if I sensed that the current stalemate was being thawed, I could have excused this CO2 gluttony.
Really, it would have been OK.
But no. My heart sank as I saw countries walking out, as I saw the victory of politics over common sense, as I saw the rapid disintegration of this Summit. First mankind raped his home and now, when the time has come to make amends and repair the pillage, he prefers to quarrel, to cater to his fragile ego, and to continue on his path to self-destruction. The next few generations will never forgive us these sins.
What added injury to insult were the associated eco costs the Summit managed to add to, without batting an eyelid.
Future CO2 Reductions from the Copenhagen Summit in December
On second thoughts, the optimist in me probably sees a flickering ray of eco hope. What we learnt, from this Summit, is that the next one could probably be greener. If enough hoo-hah is created, then we could probably do this online in order to reduce emissions. Or maybe use recycled products and reduce greenhouse emissions.
Another point that that I liked is the environment and our role in polluting it has crept into the global limelight. Summits, such as this one, were absolutely unthinkable even 30 years ago. So perhaps this is the first step in which we collectively come together in one place and time and at least, discuss the issues and arrive at a consensus. The next step shall be when firm commitments are made and universally applied.
So instead of writing off The Copenhagen Summit in December Id like to imagine that this did help, somewhat, a wee bit perhaps, in helping us wage the battle against CO2.
