How to Tow With Rope
- 1). Turn off the engine of the car to be towed. Put the transmission in "park" and set the parking brake.
- 2). Drive the towing vehicle up to the car to be towed. Place the tow vehicle in "park" and set the parking brake. Tie a thick, sturdy rope to the tow strap or metal hook positioned on the underside of the vehicle's back frame. Double loop it before tying so that it remains secure.
- 3). Determine where the tow strap is on the vehicle to be towed. Again, look for it underneath the front or back of the car's frame. Attach the rope inside the hole, double looping it and tying securely. If there is no tow strap, simply tie the rope directly to the frame, making sure that it is tight enough that it will not loosen.
- 4). Select a driver to steer the vehicle being towed. Once inside, start the engine (if possible) and set the transmission to "neutral." Steer and brake the towed vehicle so that it maintains an appropriate following distance from the towing vehicle. Stay in communication with the driver of the towing vehicle so there are no surprise stops or turns.
- 5). Turn on the flashers or hazard lights of both vehicles. Drive the towing vehicle at a maximum speed of 15 mph. Drive in the slow lane and make wide, deliberate turns to avoid a collision.
