Visa Requirements for UK Citizens
- The visa waiver program allows citizens of the UK to enter the US for up to 90 days for the purposes of visiting without a prior visa. To be eligible, a traveler must not have any criminal convictions or have violated any immigration laws in the past, such as overstaying a visa.
- To work in the United States, UK citizens require a visa. There are several types of work visa available, depending upon the type and duration of the work being performed.
- If a UK citizen is engaged to a US citizen and wishes to join them in the US for the purposes of settlement, they must apply for a K-1 fiance visa. Upon their marriage, the fiance is then eligible to adjust their status to that of a permanent resident.
- Spouses of US citizens and lawful permanent residents who wish to settle with their spouse in the US may apply for either a K-3 or an IR-1/CR-1 visa. A K-3 visa is a multiple entry visa which requires adjustment of status after entry. With an IR-1/CR-1 visa, status is adjusted upon entry.
- Students who wish to study in the US must apply for an F-1 student visa. A J-1 visa may also be used, for secondary school study.
