The Pacific Northwest has its own history, and several Washington state institutions strive to support regional historians and historical organizations through the provisions of grants and other awards. A variety of grants is available for students as well as professionals. Take advantage of these grants to preserve valuable histories and to make them available for public appreciation. - Overseen by the Washington State Historical Society, the Heritage Capital Projects Fund aims to preserve historic buildings and artifacts. Grants are available for non-profit organizations, tribal organizations and local government groups. The support from this fund has led to the creation of new museums, the preservation and improvement of historical archives and sites and the restoration of historic train and ship equipment. Grant amounts are based on need; however, projects must have a minimum budget of $25,000.

A local organization must have certified local government program, or CLG, status for consideration. The grants are used to research and identify historically important resources so that they can be preserved and nominated for the National Register of Historic Places. Funding is also available for the preservation of pre-historic sites.
