Since June 1998, new Directives are working in European Union for importing products from non-European states. The directives cover many products, which includes pressure vessels, mediacal equipments, toys, recreational crafts, and many more. This article will cover the Directive for recreational crafts to help the people who enjoy boating and import boats to European market. All the crafts are liable to meet the requirements of Recreational Craft Directive (RCD). And, to comply with it, CE marking came into existence. CE is a symbol, which means same in all the European Union member states. The symbol stands for Conformit© Europ©enne, which means European Conformity.

RCD is incorporated as a National Law, and the responsibility of its application was tasked to the Maritime Safety Directorate. It asks for a CE boat (ce bt) and outline the minimum standards for the design and construction of a recreational craft.

The Directive applies to all the recreational crafts that have been manufactured within the European Economic Area (EEA) since 1998. The liability is applicable equally to individuals and businesses who place their craft, between 2.5m to 24m hull length, in the EU market. The regulations are also applicable on the crafts which are imported from countries outside the EEA, irrespective of the date of construction.

In 2004, the RCD was amended to include harmonised provisions for exhaust gas and noise emission. Jet Skis were also covered under the directive from January 2005, which made CE making of jet (ce-m¤rkning vattenskoter) a liability for the importers or the manufacturers.

If you are buying a new boat, importing a boat from a non-European country, a used boat less than 8 years old, or a partially completed kit boat, you should keep certain points in mind. The boat must be equipped with the following items:

Hull Identification Number (HIN): All the crafts have a unique Hull Identification Number which is permanently located on or near the starboard of the transom. The HIN contains the manufacturer's identification code, country of manufacture, and date of construction.

Builder's plate and CE mark: Every boat used in EU must have builder's plate. The plate should contain the manufacturer's details, engine power, design category, maximum loading, and a CE
mark. A (CE boat) CE Bt is considered a passport to enter European water bodies.

Owner's manual: There must be an owner's manual with every new craft containing instructions for the maintenance of the craft and its safe use.

Declaration of conformity: A document signed by the manufacturer declaring that his craft meets all the essential requirements. It is a legal document and the custom officers may ask for it.

These are some of the basic guidance for for importing recreational crafts to European Economic Area.
