How to Troubleshoot a Small-Engine Snowblower

    • 1). Pull the spark plug out of the black hose on the side of the motor. If the tip is broken, the plug will not make a spark hot enough to start the engine. Replace the plug if it is broken.

    • 2). Inspect the plastic fuel tank for any leaks or cracks. These mean the engine will not get enough fuel into the carburetor to run properly. Apply plastic epoxy to cracks and allow it to dry overnight.

    • 3). Examine the auger blades. If the blades are clogged, the snowblower will not suck in any snow. Use the plastic stick that sits above the base to remove any clogs. Never put your hands near the blades because they are very sharp. If there are no clogs, check the chute. If nothing is inside the chute, the auger blade belt needs to be changed. It is located behind the blades and underneath the mower.

    • 4). Follow the starter cables from the handle to the motor. Make sure they are screwed in. If they are not, the blower will not turn on. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to screw the cables back into position.

    • 5). Replace the drive belt if the snowblower will not move. The drive belt propels the wheels forward and if it is broken, the wheels will not move. To replace it, pull the back side of the motor off and look for a belt running between both wheels.
