How to Write a Story of Man Vs. the Supernatural
- 1). Decide exactly what supernatural elements you wish to incorporate into your story. You may wish to research certain topics at this stage. Reading up on things like mythology, fables and fairy tales may help you. Try also taking inspiration from things like nightmares or scary stories that frightened you. The supernatural need not be frightening, however. It can also be inspirational or beautiful. For example, one definition of "supernatural" is simply a being, place, object, or occurrence with an origin outside of the natural.
- 2). Create a situation involving both the supernatural and an element of conflict. Many stories revolve around the resolution of conflicts of various sorts, so creating a conflict will enable you to write a story wherein that conflict is resolved. Create multiple conflicts to be solved if you wish to write a longer narrative such as a novel. Try tying them all together in some way such as relating them all through a specific character or event. Generate conflict by setting narrative goals and placing obstacles to fulfilling those goals.
- 3). Create a character to oppose the supernatural element you have chosen. There are many different ways to create characters. Devise a backstory explaining where your character came from and where he wants to go, as well as how he came into conflict with your supernatural element. Create a reason for him to stay and fight the supernatural element as well. It won't be a plausible story if your character has no need or desire to stay.
- 4). Write an outline of the major incidents in the story. This can be as detailed or as simple as you like. Try to at least come up with something at the beginning, middle, and end of the story so that if you get lost while writing you can use these as signposts to keep you on track.
- 5). Write your story using the materials you devised from the above steps.
