Among the predictions for the year 2012 is something that some people call the Great Purification.
Details are sketchy, and often at variance depending on who is doing the talking, but there is general agreement that this event represents a threshing of the world's people to separate the wheat from the chaff.
This implies that some will survive the cataclysmic events of 2012 and some will not.
A different take on the Great Purification is that it applies to everyone, that it will raise our individual vibrations to some new level that will enable us to create a new society of peace and harmony.
You also hear the terms "transcendence" and "ascension" used in this context.
Whatever this event is, most of the people using it say that it is nothing to fear, but to the contrary will bring such positive changes to the earth and its inhabitants that we will wish it had happened earlier.
On the other hand, some people -- notably Christians who believe in the "Left Behind" type of prophecy -- say that evil schemers, perhaps Satan himself or his henchman, the Antichrist, will use the idea of a Great Purification to cover the truth of the Rapture.
The Rapture of course (say some believers) is when Christ will come and take away his followers, leaving the earth to a terrible time of tribulations.
My personal opinion is that the truth of the coming events of 2012 will lie somewhere in the middle.
They will not be easy.
They will not be painless.
They will not be without grief and sorrow.
But in the end, on the other side of those terrible events, there does lie a better world for everyone who can survive.
