Trying to find information on zoning through the internet can be a frustrating task and when you are done, you might not be any further than before you started.
Even the pages specifically described as zoning information do not always provide want to know.
It can be frustrating and leave you scratching your head after 20 minutes of hunting around a government website.
Instead, it is much better to go the old fashioned way and pick up the phone and call.
The zoning changes from city to city, so the best way to find out zoning information is to call Building and Safety for the city that the house is located at.
You can also visit the local office if you want more detailed information about a property, including any changes or additions that you would like to make to a property.
Someone will look over any paperwork, or plans you have for construction and let you know what permits you will need, if any.
Once you receive help from someone you feel is very knowledgeable, ask for their office number and call them when you need their assistance in the future.
They will often be glad to answer more questions over the phone at a later date.
If the property is located in a rural area, you will probably have to call regional planning instead.
Regional planning deals with planning and developing larger areas, including multiple cities.
The planning commissioner's job is to predict how a particular area will grow and how fast it will become populated, so they can put up roads beforehand.
This is also a great way to find information on how fast the area will be built up, which might make a difference on the resale value of your home.
For instance, if they are planning on putting in a major road and expecting the area to expand within a few years, you could be buying a property in the heart of a city that will be booming.
The zoning in these cases can make a big difference in the value of what your property will be worth.
In such a case, you might want to buy up some extra land near a developing business area as an investment as well.
