Having high HDL levels is important to ensure you have good health.
High HDL means that you will have less of the bad cholesterol (LDL) floating around in your blood meaning a healthier heart.
In addition to that it is now believed that good levels of HDL can help the body to ward off infection, help fight inflammation and also possibly repel certain cancers.

  1. Exercise - Getting your body moving is a key way to raising HDL levels.
    The increase you see will ultimately depend on your current activity levels; if you are very sedentary you will see a big jump, if you are active you will still see a jump it just will not appear to be as great.
    To get started with your exercise regime, just do something simple like walking briskly or cycling for half an hour per day.
  2. Omega 3's - Omega 3's are great for raising HDL levels, and the best source to get them from is oily fish, so make sure that you are eating at least two portions of either salmon, mackerel, tuna (tuna steaks not the canned stuff) or a similar type of oily fish per week.
    The reason it is so good for you is that it helps to keep triglyceride levels low, and when that happens, as a byproduct you end out with higher levels of HDL.
  3. Alcohol - Alcohol is also good for raising HDL levels, however it is important not to overdo it.
    Most alcohol will be beneficial, but ideally if you can then red wine is the best option.
    One to two glasses a day will help to boost HDL, however if you start drinking more than that you will increase triglyceride levels.
In addition to these three steps for raising HDL, something that is becoming increasingly popular is the use of natural supplements, particularly blended ones.
Blended supplements are not only good for raising HDL levels, but if you get one containing policosanol then it also helps the liver to produce less cholesterol in the first place.
