How to Troubleshoot Window Problems in a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee
- 1). Check the window lockout to make sure it is disengaged. If the lockout button is pushed in, it is engaged and the windows will not operate from any switch besides the one on the driver door.
- 2). Check the number 13 fuse or circuit breaker if none of the windows work. If the fuse is bad, a break or burn is visible on the metal line running through the fuse.
- 3). Check the rear window lockout switch if neither back window is operable or if they are only operable from the master switch. Use the voltmeter to check for voltage.
- 4). Check the wiring from the fuse panel to the switch for voltage. If no voltage is present, replace the wiring (on rear windows).
- 5). Check the switch for voltage for any inoperable window if the window works from one switch but not the other, for example if the window works from its own switch but not from the main switch.
- 6). Check for a short or opening in the wires if the switches have power going to them.
- 7). Remove the trim from the door if the window will not operate from either switch. Check the window motor for voltage while the switch is operated.
- 8). Disconnect the glass from the window regulator if power is reaching the motor. Move the glass up and down by hand to make sure the window is not getting caught on anything inside the door. If the regulator is not damaged and the window moves freely, replace the window motor.
- 9). Check the wiring between the switches and the motor if there is no power to the motor.
