Definition:
Proctitis is an inflammation of the lining of the rectum. Diarrhea is the most common symptom.
Proctitis is a common side effect experienced by men who are undergoing radiation therapy for prostate cancer. It can also be caused by infection.
This often occurs following radiation therapy for prostate cancer due to the close proximity of the prostate to the rectum. Some parts of the rectum are nearly always at least partially affected by radiation that is directed toward the prostate.
