How to Create an Online Alias
- 1). Launch your Web browser on your computer.
- 2). Go to a website that offers free email addresses, such as Google, Yahoo! or Hotmail. Sign up for a free account.
- 3). Type a name that has nothing to do with your real identity, but that conveys the impression you want to give. For example, you might prefer to blend in, so you could choose a common name and then add a number to it, such as the street address of your childhood home, or a year that is significant to you, such as a wedding anniversary. You could also create a name that gives people a sense of your personality, such as a hobby you enjoy or a favorite vacation location.
- 4). Go to an online name generator if you have trouble thinking up your own online alias. For example, visit the Nickname Generator (getnicknames.com), the Online Name Generator (online-generator.com) or The Pirate Name Generator (gangstaname.com/names/pirate). Click a button on the site to generate a new name for you to use online.
- 5). Go to a website that requires you to register before using its services, such as reading news articles or posting in a forum. Type your assumed name, a password and an email address, if required, in the signup form. Depending on the type of site or service you are using, you might need to enter a first and last name, or you might be able to use a single user name. Your new online name could be the same or similar to the one you used to sign up for a free email address.
