Driver Education Requirements
- Anyone at age 15 can enroll in a driving education course. These courses are 30 hours and cover the basics of driving, traffic laws, signs and driver safety. These classes are taught in a traditional classroom format with an instructor guiding the instruction. Some states offer driver's education classes at the high school level, while other states require that students take privatized classes.
- Students must have 3 to 6 hours of road experience to pass a driver education class (hour requirements vary by state). Oftentimes, the class has several cars designed specifically for driving practice. These cars are built with breaks on both the driver and passenger side so that the instructor can bring the car to a halt if the student is about to hit something.
- Driver education courses end with an exam. This exam is a multiple choice exam in which the student answers questions regarding material learned in the classroom. Different states have different requirements on how high a student has to score to graduate from a driver's education class. Once the exam has been passed, the student is eligible to take a written and driving test at a local license branch.
- License branches provide booklets that instruct the reader on the rules of the road. In order to receive a driving license, the applicant must pass a written and driving test. The applicant only has 3 tries to pass the test and then must wait 6 months before taking the test again after failing. Applicants must be 18 or must have passed a driver education course to take both the driving and written tests.
- To receive a driving license, the driver must pass a driving test. Some driving tests require that the driver successfully navigate around cones and some driving tests require that the driver successfully perform several driving tasks on the road such as parallel parking and 3-point turns. A representative of the license branch accompanies the driver on the test.
