How to Make Sequin Appliques Using a String of Sequins
- 1). Press any wrinkles out of a piece of organza with a warm iron. Separate the hoops of an embroidery hoop. Lay the organza over the bottom or smaller hoop. Place the top or larger hoop on top of the organza and press it down around the bottom hoop. Pull on the edges of the organza to tighten its surface inside the hoops. Tighten the screw on the embroidery hoop to secure the organza in place.
- 2). Transfer your applique pattern onto the surface of the organza. Place the pattern underneath the organza. Trace the pattern on the top surface of the organza using tailor's chalk.
- 3). Thread a sewing needle with transparent thread. Tie a knot in the ends of the thread. Insert your needle through the backside of the organza at a point on the pattern where you wish to begin attaching the sequin string. Push the top 1-inch of needle through the fabric.
- 4). Find the end of the string of sequins. Slip the first sequin on the string face up onto the needle. Push the sequin down the needle until it is resting on the fabric. Hold the sequin against the fabric while pulling the needle and thread up through its center hole. Pull on the needle until the knot in the thread catches at the back of the organza.
- 5). Insert the needle back through the organza at a point just under the sequin's edge. Pull the needle and thread through the fabric until the thread wraps tightly around the side of the sequin.
- 6). Insert the needle through the backside of the fabric and up through the center of the first sequin. Pull the needle and thread completely through. Push the needle back down through the organza at a point just underneath the sequin's edge opposite the first stitch. Pull the needle and through to the backside of the fabric.
- 7). Position the next sequin on the string in the correct position along the line of the pattern. Sew two stitches around the side of this sequin in the same manner as before.
- 8). Continue to sew each sequin on the string to the fabric pattern in order. Make sure the strand of sequins remains facing upright so you can sew each sequin onto the fabric in the right direction. Lay a few inches of the sequin strand in the correct position on the pattern at one time to ensure that the sequins lay flat.
- 9). End with the needle and thread protruding from the backside of the organza. Tie a knot in the thread close to the back of the fabric. Clip the excess thread with a pair of scissors. Cut off the excess strand of sequins by clipping the thread past the last sequin in the pattern.
