At first it seemed that a hurricane named Katrina might scuttle the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards presented Sunday, August 28th. Then the shooting of hip hop mogul Suge Knight at a party hosted by Kanye West threatened to cast a cloud over the festivities. However, MTV vowed that the celebration would go on, and it did. Miami pulled out all the stops for the annual bash celebrating the world of music videos.

As many expected, Green Day, recipients of more nominations than anyone else, took home the most awards with 6. The remaining awards were widely distributed with no one else taking home more than 2. Kelly Clarkson, Missy Elliott, the Gorillaz, and Gwen Stefani all received 2 awards. Be sure to check out the complete list of winners.

Performances

At the MTV Video Music Awards the onstage performances often threaten to overwhelm the actual awards. This year was no different. A stunning blast from the past took the stage in the person of M.C. Hammer performing "U Can't Touch This." Coldplay's Chris Martin showed his respect for the audience by rushing to sing the final chorus of "Speed Of Sound" from the cheap seats.

R. Kelly, a last minute addition to the performance list, riveted the crowd with an acted out version of his recent headline making "Trapped In the Closet," featuring a new episdode in the song suite's soap opera story. Prior to the actual awards ceremony, MTV presented impressive performances by rappers Mike Jones, Slim Thug, and Paul Wall as well as Rihanna with her massive hit "Pon De Replay" and Fall Out Boy electrifying the crowd tearing through "Sugar, We're Goin' Down."
