Many dogs are scared of thunder.
The sound of an approaching storm can have them following their owner around, panting, whining and shaking with fear.
Others will try to escape the storm by running away, or finding a place to hide.
Here are some tips to help calm your dog's fear of thunder.

1. Make sure your dog is safe.
   Many dogs become frantic to escape a storm, and will run away in a blind panic and can become lost, injured or even killed.
   If you think a storm may be coming, bring your dog inside and make sure he cannot escape.
   
2. If your dog has a spot where he likes to hide, make sure he has easy access to it.
   Some soft bedding will make them feel more comfortable and secure.
   Pull the drapes over the windows to try to muffle the sound as much as possible.
   You could try playing some relaxing music to help mask the sound of the storm.
   
3. Act calm and in control.
   If your dog can see that you are nervous, or you are running around slamming windows and doors, it will only add to his anxiety.
   
4. Avoid fussing over your dog.
   Being near your dog can help him feel more secure, but try not to make a fuss over him while he is acting scared.
   Instead of comforting him, you may be confirming that there is something to be afraid of.
   
5. It is easy to become frustrated and annoyed by your dog's frightened behaviour, but you should never punish or scold him for it.
   He can't help being afraid, and scolding him for it can only increase his anxiety.
   
6. Desensitize your dog to the sound of thunder by purchasing or making your own a recording of thunderstorm noises, and playing it at a low enough volume that it does not scare your dog.
   If he remains calm, praise him and give him a food treat.
   The aim is to have the dog associate the noise of thunder with something pleasurable, rather than something to fear.
   Play the recording for a few minutes every day, gradually increasing the volume, and continue to reward him for being calm.
   If your dog shows signs of being scared, you will need to lower the volume again and proceed at a slower pace.
   
7. Try a thunder coat for your dog.
   They are basically a pressure wrap, which applies a constant, gentle pressure around the dog's torso.
   This pressure gives them a feeling of security, quickly calming their fear.
