Police Policy on Barking Dogs
- Pet ownership and nuisance barking laws are generally found in local municipality codes and are enforced by animal services departments throughout the nation. The police are generally unable to take action, until court action has been taken and dog owners are in violation of court orders.
- Be methodical and take action in logical steps. Talk to your neighbors amicably and explain the barking problem without being confrontational. Keep records of the time and duration of the barking -- you must establish that the barking is a frequent problem. Call your local animal services department and report the problem, and ask other neighbors to do likewise. Call your local police department and ascertain their specific policies.
- If you are not satisfied with the action of your local municipality and the nuisance barking persists, you may instigate a civil action through the court and sue your neighbor for disrupting your peaceable enjoyment of your home.
