How to Change Lanes in an Intersection

    • 1). Change lanes if somebody pulls in front of you while you are moving (assuming it is too late to stomp the brake). Drivers must always attempt to prevent an accident (taking care not to cause a bigger accident). This move will obviously go from the right lane to the left; never go from the left lane to the right, or you may drive right into somebody making a legal right turn on red (you might both receive a ticket in this scenario).

    • 2). Change lanes to get around traffic and out of an intersection. You should take care not to pull into any intersection behind backed-up traffic by observing what is happening in front of you. If you find yourself in this situation -- and can use the other lane to get out of harm's way -- turn your appropriate signal on, look over your shoulder and wait until traffic has sufficiently cleared behind you, then make your move quickly. If there are cars directly behind you, be sure they are not making this move at the same time.

    • 3). Ready a good explanation (or the cash to pay up). Driving laws are different wherever you go, but most of them err on the side of caution by saying that any unsafe lane changes are illegal. It is also illegal not reduce speed or to attempt to avoid an accident. Use your best discretion.
