Get Free Admission at Various Attractions for MLK Day 2015
Martin Luther King Jr. Day provides a great opportunity to see some of our city's top attractions for free. Various attractions open up free to the public and provide special educational programs honoring the life and work of Dr. King. Many kids are out of school on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and that means many parents take the day off as well. Don't spend your time trapped inside on another cold day. Get out and see the city! This compiled list will give you a few choices about how to spend the day.
Celebrate MLK Jr. Day by immersing yourself in the culture and art of the American West. The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians & Western Art is open that day from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Visit the West in the RB Annis Western Family Experience. See how four families live in the West and walk into a Navajo Hogan or climb aboard a true-to-life stagecoach. Celebrate the life, dream and legacy of the late Dr. King at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis January 19 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Enjoy special activities, storytelling, and performances by The Griot Drum Ensemble and Epiphany Dance Collective.The museum will offer all guests special entertainment throughout the day with free admission! Outdoor fun includes visits to the Conner homestead, the Lenape Indian camp and the Golden Eagle Inn. Indoors, explore the nature of peaceful protests, past and present with us, through photos juxtaposing past and modern-day protests, painting a mural depicting civil rights protest scenes, and engaging in discussions. Play Black History Bingo with us every half hour and add your dream to the Tree of Dreams. The IMAX Theater, located at the Indiana State Museum is offering a free movie in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Experience “Island of Lemurs” for free until 5 p.m. Admission is free for each canned good donated to Gleaners Food Bank. Free parking is available in the underground parking garage in front of the Indiana State Museum. Free tickets are available beginning at 10 a.m. (at the Box Office) on a first-come, first-served basis. Shown for free as space permits at 11:25am, 12:50 p.m., 2:15 p.m., 3:40 p.m. & 5 p.m. Get your IMAX tickets early as they typically are all gone by noon.

The Indiana Historical Society will offer free admission January 19, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Visitors can take part in the National Day of Service by packing care packages to benefit the Wheeler Mission from noon to 4 p.m. Meet prominent Indianapolis physician Dr. Harvey Middleton in You Are There 1939: Healing Bodies, Changing Minds and enjoy the exhibit Who Is a Hoosier? as well as attend a discussion highlighting collection items documenting Indianapolis’ African-American communities.

If you haven't been to the Indiana State Museum, this is the perfect opportunity to visit for free. Join the Indiana State Museum in celebrating the life and legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with music, dance and theatre performances, poetry readings, art making activities and film viewings throughout the day.
Returning this year, Eskenazi Health and the Indianapolis Indians will again offer free health screenings but at a new location: at the Indiana State Museum. From 10 am to 2 pm, nurses will also be available to discuss the importance of primary and preventive care. Anyone who participates in the health screenings will receive a complimentary ticket to Opening Night in Victory Field at White River State Park on April 9th courtesy of the Indianapolis Indians. Plus, Rowdie, the Indians mascot, will stop by for autographs between 11 am and noon ( 12 pm ).

The Indianapolis Museum of Art celebrates the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Sunday, January 18, from 2-5 p.m. with free admission and a special program called Speaking of Love.
Hear Indianapolis writers, poets, singers, and artists speaking of love in the galleries as we remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy of speaking truth and love to powers that sought to divide humanity based on fear and prejudices. Visitors of all ages are encouraged to step up to the mic and share their own expressions of love. Participate in a social art experiment and bring letters or notes that comfort, encourage, uplift, compliment or motivate and give them to people you don’t know. Got writer’s block? Indiana Writers Center staff and volunteers will be on hand to help you craft a message. All activities and parking are free for the day.

The animals at the Indianapolis Zoo are often more active in cooler weather. Take the opportunity to see the animals and enjoy the smaller crowds. Highlights of the day include the free dolphin shows, indoor shark petting and warming up in the Deserts Dome. Also watch the film “A Ripple of Hope,” which is based on the speech given by Robert Kennedy in Indianapolis on the night Martin Luther King, Jr. died. The film narrates the events through the eyes of those who were there, including Julia Carson, the late U.S. Congressperson from Indiana; Tom Cochrun, Indianapolis reporter; and Rev.
