How to Get a Low Income Apartment
- 1). Determine if you are eligible to receive low income housing. To qualify, your household income cannot exceed the limits set forth by your area's public housing authority. In addition, you must be at least 18-years-old and have no history of violence.
- 2). Contact your local public housing authority to obtain an application for Section 8 housing. The application is free and you can apply with more than one organization.
- 3). Complete the application. Be honest about your situation and include any necessary documentation, such as pay stubs, income tax records and other forms. You are also required to list everyone who will be living in the home with you.
- 4). Have your name placed onto each public housing authority's waiting list. Be prepared to wait--it can take a year or longer to reach the top of the list. Notify your public housing authority if you are facing an emergency situation. Under certain circumstances, you may be given priority.
- 5). Make sure you notify the public housing authority if your contact information changes. Once your name reaches the top of the waiting list, you will be issued a housing a voucher (via mail).
- 6). Locate an apartment that participates in the Section 8 program and meets HUD requirements. Be aware that you have a specified amount of time to find appropriate housing (usually 90 days or less).
