Musicals A Vampire Would Love

From thrillers to comedy horrors, there is a musical for everyone. Some musicals are eerie and dark and others are inspiring and funny. Despite their paranormal themes, most of these musicals fall into the latter category.

1. The Addams Family -- music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa

Wednesday finds a “normal” boyfriend and dreads the dinner where the two families will meet. Hilarious chaos ensues. Though the Addams family movie may seem dark, sinister, and odd; this musical is much less so and ends hopeful.

Favorite Songs: “The Addams Family Theme,” “When You’re an Addams,” “Pulled,” “One Normal Night,” “Full Disclosure,” “Crazier Than You.”

2. Shrek the Musical -- music by Jeanine Tesori, lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire

It does not get any more supernatural than talking donkeys and a human that turns ogre by night. Though Shrek the Musical has some of the same humor as the Disney movie, it does a much better job at presenting the story in an uplifting, moralistic way. The song, “Freak Flag,” sums up the message of acceptance with the lyrics, “Let your freak flag fly. Never take it down, never take it down. Raise it way up high!”

Favorite Songs: “I Know It’s Today,” “Who I’d Be,” “Morning Person,” “Build a Wall,” “Freak Flag,” “I’m a Believer.”

3. Jekyll & Hyde -- music and lyrics by Frank Wildhorn

Doctor Henry Jekyll believes his comatose father is trapped by his own evil and creates a formula that may eradicate it. Unable to find a test subject and desperate to save his father, he injects himself. Instead of eliminating evil, it creates an alternate, aggressive personality named Edward Hyde who ruins his life.

Favorite Songs: “Take Me as I Am,” “No One Knows Who I Am,” “This Is the Moment,” “Someone Like You,” “Once Upon a Dream,” “Dangerous Game,” “A New Life.”

4. Little Shop of Horrors -- music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman

Little Shop of Horrors is about a poor and timid man who finds a plant from another planet that requires blood to survive. He feeds the plant his own blood until the plant requires a whole human to continue growing. He sets up a couple feedings before he realizes the plant wants to take over the world. The storyline is presented in a way that makes you laugh and weirds you out at the same time, which makes it perfect for Halloween.

Favorite Songs: “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Skid Row,” “Dentist!” “Somewhere That’s Green,” “Feed Me (Git It),” “Suddenly Seymour.”

5. Wicked -- music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz

Wicked is the “untold story of the witches of Oz.” The good witch, Glinda, and The Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba, were roommates in school. While Glinda was always popular, Elphaba’s strange green skin and opposition to the leader of Oz, the Wizard, leads to misunderstandings. She attempts to help her friends and the animals of Oz with some disastrous results.

Favorite Songs: “The Wizard and I,” “Popular,” “I’m Not That Girl,” “Defying Gravity,” “No One Mourns the Wicked,” “As Long as You’re Mine,” “No Good Deed,” “For Good.”

6. The Nightmare Before Christmas -- music and lyrics by Danny Elfman

Though a Disney musical, The Nightmare Before Christmas makes the list because of its unique relationship to the supernatural; it even boasts a few stand-alone songs that you may consider using in a recital or concert such as, "Jack's Lament." The Pumpkin King, Jack, in Halloween town is tired of leading Halloween and wants Santa Claus’ job instead. He assigns his citizens the job of making Christmas. Mixing the two holidays leads to ruin that only Santa Claus can save. In the end, Jack learns to love Halloween again.

Favorite Songs: “Jack’s Lament,” “What’s This?” “Sally’s Song,” “Oogie-Boogie’s Song,” “This is Halloween.”
