Selenium daily for your Cancer protection, happiness and wellbeing Selenium is thought to be one of the most effective, naturally occurring weapons against cancer and is, like most healthy things, something few of us are getting enough of.
The mineral has been shown in multiple studies to be an effective tool in warding off various types of cancer, including the areas of the breast, esophageal, stomach, prostate, liver and bladder.
The daily recommended intake is 200 micrograms per day,few people in the Western world achieve anything like this dose through their normal eating habits Strangely, the first recognised usage of selenium in conventional medicine was as a treatment for dandruff, but further research and understanding of the mineral has catapulted it into the limelight and it is now considered an essential mineral requirement.
Research has discovered that this 'wonder mineral' helps stop damaged DNA molecules from reproducing.
So how does this help in warding off, or treating cancer? Research has discovered that not only does selenium act to prevent tumors from developing.
but it contributes towards the death of cancerous and pre-cancer cells.
In addition to preventing the onset of the disease, this mineral has also been shown to aid in slowing cancer's progression in patients who already have the condition and further enhances the effectiveness of chemo, radiation, and hyperthermia treatment, while minimizing damage to the patient's normal cells A 1996 study by Dr.
Larry Clark of the University of Arizona showed just how effective selenium can be in protecting against cancer.
In the study of 1,300 older people, the occurrence of cancer among those who took 200 micrograms of selenium daily for about seven years was reduced by 42 percent compared to those given a placebo.
While the study concluded the mineral helped protect against all types of cancer, it had extremely powerful impact on prostate, colorectal and lung cancers.
Although too much selenium can actually be toxic to the system, research indicates the majority of the population is not getting enough of this essential mineral.
So, how can you up your intake of selenium and help the body to fight the cancer threat? Mushrooms, egg yolks, seafood, poultry, kidney, liver and muscle meats are the richest source of the mineral, more so if they are organic.
Vegetables like garlic, onions, broccoli, asparagus, tomatoes and otherscontain lesser amounts, as do whole grains and seeds which are good sources of selenium.
The selenium content of food is largely dependent on the content of volcanic ash in the soil on which the food was grown, the higher the ash content the higher selenium levels.
While there aren't too many of us with volcanoes in the back garden, stimulating this little mineral,no doubt your local garden centre will have a soil conditioner that replicates this, should you want to grow your own supply or feed your chickens on for their 'medicinal eggs'.
One way to get more selenium in your diet might be to eat more organically grown foods, which some studies have shown to contain more selenium as well as higher levels of beta carotene and vitamin E.
If you feel the need and your diet is lacking many of these foodstuffs, then you may want to boost your selenium intake by adding supplements, just remember that too much of this mineral can be toxic, so don't overdo the tablets and never exceed the stated dose.
A somewhat strange and unusual finding in another study, was that people who don't eat enough selenium-rich foods tend to be 'grumpier' than people with a high dietary intake, so if you want 'happy and healthy'get stuck into the foods that matter for your emotional and physical wellbeing.
