What Is Flushed Out of Your Nose Using a Neti Pot?
- The nasal passages are designed to trap dust and other foreign particles in order to prevent them from entering the body. Unfortunately, it is possible for the nasal passages to become too full of these particles.
- Using a Neti pot flushes excess mucus, dust, pollen and irritants caused by pollution and exposure to chemicals from the nasal passages.
- Practicing Neti also relieves dryness of the nasal passages, allergies and sinus infections and allows for freer breathing.
- The most common form of Neti uses a warm saline solution to wash the nasal passages, which is known as Jala Neti. There are more advanced techniques that use herbs and oils as well.
- Fill a Neti pot with a solution of 1/4 tsp of non-iodized table salt and 8 ounces of lukewarm water. Insert the tip of the pot into one nostril and tilt your head to the side while standing over a sink or basin. The water will flow into one nostril and out the other. Repeat on the other side.
