Minnesota State Fair

• The Minnesota State Fair takes place every year from the last week of August to the first week of September. Plan a weekend and make your way around this huge fair in St. Paul. The city has many accommodations, including the Crowne Plaza Hotel on the Mississippi River and an array of other hotels. The fair offers shows, games, food, a haunted house, water rides, a talent show and a variety of booths. Many concerts by top performing artists are also held at the state fair each year.

Minnesota's Great River Road

• A unique weekend getaway for families is a trip down the southern stretch of Minnesota's Great River Road. Start your weekend getaway in Red Wing, Minnesota, and take pictures of the 16-foot Red Wing boots that are on display at the Red Wing Shoe Museum. Along the scenic drive, you can camp and picnic at Great River Bluffs State Park and Frontenac State Park. The next stop should be spacious Lake Park in Winona, and you can grab a bite to eat at the Lakeside Drive Inn. Then travel on to Kellogg, Minnesota, and visit LARK Toys, a specialty toy store that has more than 20,000 square feet to explore, including vintage toy exhibits, a hand-carved merry-go-round, miniature golf and other goodies galore.
  
  

JailHouse Inn

• The JailHouse Inn in Preston, Minnesota, is an unusual bed and breakfast. The building was originally constructed in 1869 and was used as a jail until 1970. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The bed and breakfast offers a "from scratch" breakfast each morning, and all rooms have a private bath. The Cell Block Room, which is an original cell block, allows guests to sleep behind bars and has a private entrance, porch, whirlpool tub and two queen-size beds.
