Tips on Choosing a Designer Kitchen

101 10
There are two aspects to choosing a designer kitchen. First find the brand, then find the person who can design that brand into your space.

Let's begin with the brand. As with other industries such as clothing, the top kitchen brands set the trends and the others follow with their lower cost versions. The top brands such as Boffi, bulthaup, Poggenpohl and Smallbone, employ designers to create new ranges, sometimes bringing in celebrities to lend their name to a particular look.

These brands promote their new designs in the top glossy interiors magazines so this is a good place to start. There is no one kitchen design that is right for everyone and every house.  Look through and see what you are attracted to, follow up with an investigation of their websites, narrow down to a final one or two, and make time to visit their showrooms.

Once you are in the presence of the kitchen furniture you can properly explore it and discover whether it is well designed or not. First impressions will be important. Hopefully you will get a sense of balance, sharpness and a little excitement.  But good kitchen design should make live easier as well as look great; the old phrase 'form follows function' is crucial in kitchen design. Here are some tips on what to consider.
  • On the surface- What materials are being used for doors and worktops? Are they fit for purpose? How well will they stand up to red wine spillage and simple finger prints?
  • Look at all the edges- Are they sealed and smooth? Do they add to the design, or detract from it?
  • Investigate the interiors- How flexible are the storage options? Will you be able to store and easily access everything from cake forks to the turkey platter, from rolling pin to food processor and nutmegs to giant packs of cornflakes?
  • Behind the scenes- Good design carries through to the moving parts. Check the hinges, handles, soft close mechanisms and drawers. Will they run smoothly when full of heavy crockery and pans?

Once you have decided on a well-designed brand you are ready to find the designer to help you create your kitchen. Often the designer will come with the brand. They should have the experience and knowledge to make their product look great in your space. But be careful. You are looking for a true designer, not a kitchen sales person. How will you know the difference?

A good designer will listen to what you are trying to achieve. They will ask lots of questions to ensure they understand how you, your family and your friends will use the space. They will ask about the overall style of the house and any other work you are doing. If you are working with an architect they will understand their plans and may even suggest changes to the layout in order to create the best use of internal space.

Don't be surprised if there is a design fee. True kitchen designers are professionals at what they do and will spend hours working on your behalf. You will soon know if you have found the right person and should relax into a trusting relationship. If you are in any doubt, ask to see previous examples of their work, not just in photos but by speaking to their clients.

So that's it. Choosing a designer kitchen in two steps - the brand and the designer. Good luck.
