Dancing With The Stars Spin-Off - Bruno Vs. Carrie Ann

Most very successful TV programmes have their spin-offs, which are designed to milk the popular show for all the extra popularity they can get, because popularity translates into money (from advertisers or / and subscribers). Dancing with the Stars was no exception.

Dancing with the Stars spawned a spin off in which two of its judges, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba would both lead and coach a group of dancers to see who could turn out the best troupe. This was similar to Dancing with the Stars except the judges were converted into dancing instructors.

The show was even hosted by an ex Dancing with the Stars season two winner, Drew Lachey. The programmes aired its first appearance amidst a great swathe of publicity and hype on January 7th, 2008. It ceased on February 18th, 2008 and sank beneath the waves like a dead guppy, never to be seen again. It was a total flop, an unmitigated disaster.

The show began with 14 contestants who had been chosen from places across the United States. Auditions were held in places like Nashville, Santa Monica and New York City. This fact alone would normally guarantee huge interest from the big cities when people tune in to wish the local boys and girls well.

They might have tuned in, but they definitely did not stay tuned in for long. The programmes started out badly. Fourteen contestants were picked but it was too many and they had to let two go. The remaining dozen were split into two teams. The programmes pulled in more people to watch the first episode than it did for the boring finale.

Bruno vs Carrie Ann was a disasterous flop and it has never been seen again, but there have also been other attempts to tap into the colossal popularity of Strictly Come Dancing, the British show from which Dancing with the Stars is also a spin off. All of these lookalikes are spin offs from Strictly Come Dancing, strictly speaking, not spin offs of Dancing with the Stars.

The difficulty with attempting to make spin offs from a programmes based on a theme like dancing is that when you take the dancing element away, you are left with nothing to build on. They tried to copy the format with Ice Skating with the Stars, but that did not do well either.

I should imagine too many of the older sitars were worried about falling over and looking foolish or breaking bones. Come to think of it, their insurance would almost certainly not let them even try it!

It will be interesting what they come up with next to strive to squeeze a bit more cash out of the advertisers: 'Duck Hunting with the Stars may go down well with the 'huntin' and fishin' set' or maybe they would do better to strive to come up with something original to woo the voters over to their channel. There is not enough originality about for my liking as it is.
