Letter writing in todays age may seem like an ancient ritual practiced by those of older generations. There are many other rewards of sitting down and expressing yourself on paper. Letters are the means of communication. They have number of uses. The letters can be used for business communication, personal communication, expressing love, expressing feelings, authority letters, etc. As there are a number of types of letters, it is obvious that, each letter format will differ from one another. For effective letter writing, you should know how to write a letter for specific purpose. The letter writing tips will help you to learn to write a letter.

"Before starting to write letter, decide what exactly you want to add in the letter. Put all the information that reader want to know at the beginning of the letter. For example, write the date, your name, and address at the beginning of the letter.
"The name of the recipient, address and contact information for the convenience of the post-man. If the address is in other country, write the name of the country in capital letters.
"Now you have finished the initial part of letter, you should start the letter body with proper greeting. The opening should start at the left side of the page and not at the middle or right. Many people use "Dear"as the starting word followed by the name of the person and a comma "For more casual greeting, you can use "Hello"followed by the name of the person. If you are writing a formal letter, you can use the recipient"s last name followed by the semicolon instead of comma. If you don"t know recipient"s name, you can write "To whom It May Concern:"
"Start the main body of the letter. For the formal report, you can start with asking about each other. If you are writing a business letter, you can provide the purpose of writing the letter. Summarize what you want to write in the resume and state the information clearly so that the reader will understand you easily.
"The business letters should not be more than two pages long. For the formal letter, write the information of your interest. Casual letters can be long or short depending on the interest of the writer. No matter, who the reader is, keep the letter engaging. Use polite language in letter.
"The closing paragraph should indicate the type of response you seek. If you wish a response from the reader, you can write "Please reply as soon as possible"or if you expect a call, mention "Call soon"
"Write the greetings at the closing of the letter. Choose the closing greetings depending on the recipient and the level of formality. For example, "Love Always""Yours Sincerely""Talk Soon""Cheers"etc. For the business letters, mention "Regards"or "Respectfully"and sign the name underneath.
"Write your address on front of envelope in upper left corner or on the back. Recipient"s address should be on the front of envelope. Put the letter in envelope and stamp it. Now your letter is ready to post.
