5 Things That Have Made DIY Idiot Proof
Being good at DIY was once quite a boast and telling people how you made that or decorated this would get you a smile of approval. You had to be €handy€ as one popular TV show would describe a DIY genius. The problem was that all of this hierarchy left out the common man and if the modern day DIY store was going to make a profit this couldn't be allowed. €Do It Yourself€ had to be made easy enough for us all to get involved and luckily that is just what happened. Whilst there will always be jobs around the home that only a professional tradesman can do, technology has meant that there are plenty of others for us to get our teeth into.
1.The cordless drill/driver used to be an expensive piece of equipment that only those people that used it every day would consider purchasing. But now they can be picked up for less than the cost of a family fish and chip supper. So we can now fire screws into anything we choose inside or out without the need to find and untangle the extension cable. These cheap versions might not be as spectacular as the more expensive designs, but for mere mortals such as us they have a game changing effect.
2.Adhesives in a tube, usually with the word €grip€ somewhere in the title gave us the confidence to put up shelves and curtain rails safe in the knowledge that they wouldn't be in a heap on the floor the following morning. Of course we would still use screws and wall plugs to be sure, but it was the gunned on glue that gave us piece of mind.
3.Quick drying cement was once only used on jobs where time was expensive. If there was a need for a quick handyman kingston used tones of the stuff. But now it has been incorporated into things that we use to do work around the house. Next time you set a fence post in just 45 minutes take a moment to consider the poor souls that used to have to wait until the following day before discovering whether or not their panels were going to be wonky.
4.Decorators caulk is a magical filler in a tube that makes covering up blemishes on walls a cinch. Once you had to mix up a powder with water and apply it with a trowel. It set really quickly or really slowly, there never seemed to be any logic behind it, and you needed to be a half decent plasterer to make a repair job invisible. Now, of course, you just squirt wipe and paint.
5.One handed speedy style clamps have made us all into budding carpenters. These days we don't even need a workbench to shave a bit of wood off here or glue those two pieces together over there. No we just need one hand, and in seconds we have secured what we are working on so that it is safe and easy to carry out our intended job.
So next time you step back and admire what you have achieved around the home, take time to appreciate how much more simple it has become and, maybe, wipe a little of that smug grin off of your face.
