2009 Breeders Crown Entries

The finest two and three-year-old pacers and trotters in North America will be showcased on Saturday evening, October 24, at Woodbine Racetrack when the eight championship Breeders Crown finals, worth a total of $5 million, are run. Eliminations were run on the previous Friday and Saturday to determine who gets into the finals, and post positions were drawn for 6 of the 8 races. For the two marquee races, the $617,880 finals for 3-year-old male trotters and pacers, the posts were drawn at a special lunchtime ceremony at Woodbine on Tuesday.

On hand to assist with the proceedings was retired football legend Warren Moon, a Los Angeles native who was a quarterback in the Canadian Football League with the Edmonton Eskimos from 1978-1983, winning five consecutive Grey Cups. He played in Canada as he was not drafted, but having honed his skills, he moved south to the NFL's Houston Oilers, Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks, and Kansas City Chiefs. For years he held the records for most passing yardage and most passing touchdowns in professional football. He is one of only two people inducted into both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, and is the only African-American quarterback in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He names Roman Gabriel, the Los Angeles Rams quarterback during the late 1960s and early '70s, as his inspiration. Moon's favorite hobby is cooking, a skill he learned while growing up with a single mother and 6 sisters, and he used to bake cookies before games as a way to relax. Along with broadcasting Seattle Seahawks games, he is working on a pilot for a cooking show on the Food Network.

He recently released his autobiography, "Never Give Up On Your Dream".

The 3-Year-Old Colt Trot is carded as the 3rd race at 8:15pm ET, and a full field of 10 was drawn. As expected, Muscle Hill, winner of 19 straight (his only loss being a 2nd place finish in his career debut) is the 1-5 morning line choice out of the advantageous inside post. So far this year the Greg Peck trained son of Muscles Yankee has won the Hambletonian, World Trotting Derby, the Canadian Trotting Classic, and the Kentucky Futurity. With driver Brian Sears in the bike, he will attempt to be just the 3rd trotter to win both the 2-year-old and 3-year-old Breeders' Crown events. The only other horse at single digit odds in the race is 8-1 Swan For All, second in the Bluegrass Stakes at the Red Mile last out.

The last Crown race of the year will be the 3-Year-Old Colt Pace, race 9 at 10:47pm. An overflow field of 12 was drawn (the field limit is 10 so there are two also-eligibles). 8-5 favorite Well Said drew the 9 post, attempting to become the fourth pacer to win his 2-year-old and 3-year-old Breeders Crown races. The Steve Elliott-trained son of Western Hanover has won the Pepsi North America Cup, the Meadowlands Pace, and the Little Brown Jug. Regular driver Ron Pierce will be in the sulky again on Saturday night. His main competition should be Vintage Master, winner of the Adios, Cane Pace, and Tattersalls, and is the 5-1 second choice on the board.

The Breeders Crown races will begin at 7:52pm with the 3-year-old Filly Pace and will end up at 10:47pm with the 3-year-old Colt Pace. Seven of the eight races will be televised live in Canada on The Score from 8-11pm and TVG in the US will also be showing all eight races this year. As well, subscribers to satellite radio in both countries can listen to the races in a special 2-hour "Race of the Week" program from 9-11pm, on Sirius channel 126 and XM channel 243.

Below are the entries and odds for the two big races, the 3-year-old Colt and Gelding Pace and Trot. You can find the entries, post positons, odds, and race times for the rest of the Breeders Crown races on the next page.
