Definition: Removal of an ovary for any reason, including ovarian cancer, is called oophorectomy. In most cases the fallopian tube, which is closely attached, is also removed in which case the surgery is termed salpingo-oophorectomy. If one ovary is removed, the term "unilateral" or one-sided is added. If both ovaries are removed, the term bilateral is added.
