Although most people experiencing symptoms of the ano rectal region often assume that they have hemorrhoids, this might not be so all the time.

About 50% of the people experiencing ano-rectal symptoms are actually afflicted with other common ano rectal diseases like anal fissures, peri anal abscess, skin tags, rectal prolapse and other causes of itching of the butt.

Let us now examine these other common diseases of the ano-rectum that have symptoms similar to hemorrhoids:

1-Anal fissure

Anal fissure is a longitudinal tear in the skin of the anal canal, an acute tear is quite common and it usually heals quickly. If the tear is reopened every time the victim defecates because the victim is constipated and has a sphincter tone, the ulcer becomes fibrous and it does not heal gradually becoming a chronic ulcer.

Both chronic and acute ulcers are very painful, the pain of anal fissures begins during defecation and persists for minutes to hours after defecation.

Acute fissures bleed, causing feces to be streaked with blood, it also causes wipes to be stained with blood after cleaning. The victim is often constipated and the constipation is worsened by the fear of the pain caused by going to the toilet which makes the victim to delay going to the toilet.

A vicious cycle is then set up with the fear of defecation leading to delay in response to urge to move bowels on time which increases constipation, which in turn causes worsening of the pain during defecation.

Conservative measures like sitz bath, stool softeners and analgesics are used to treat this ailment, it is only when these simple measures fail to relieve the pain that you have to resort to surgery.

2-Anorectal abscess

Ano –rectal abscess occur either in the space between the internal and external sphincter or it can occur in the muscular space in the cheeks of the bum. Infection in anal gland tracks into the subcutaneous and sub mucosal tissues to form abscess.

If this condition is not treated on time it leads to formation of fistulas. This condition presents with severe throbbing pain in the bum which is worsened by sitting, movement and defecation.

The victim may have more general symptoms of fever, malaise, sweating and rigors.

The abscess presents as a painful swelling in the buttocks with overlying red hot skin close to the anus.

3-Skin tags

Skin tags are long the long term results of hemorrhoidal stretching of normal skin around the anus. After the inflammation in the hemorrhoid vessels have subsided, the distended skin does not return fully to its pre-diseased state causing the development of a redundant skin fold called a anal skin tag.

Skin tags are of no medical significance but they can cause serious cosmetic embarrassment, they are treated by plastic surgery.

4-Rectal prolapse

This is an eversion of the whole thickness of the lower part of the rectum and the anal canal, it occurs when the structures that normally hold the rectum becomes weak and lax.

It presents as a large lump protruding out of the anus after defecation or sometimes spontaneously when standing, walking or coughing. Rectal prolapse can be associated with slight mucous discharge and rectal bleeding.

If you are experiencing ano rectal symptoms you should check for the symptoms of these other diseases and once you have ruled out the other common similar diseases and you are sure that you are suffering from hemorrhoids you must commence hemorrhoid treatment as soon as possible.
