Travel Restrictions to Italy
- Citizens of the United States and Canada only need a passport to travel to Italy. If the visitor stays more than 90 days, a visa is necessary. Applying for the visa after arrival is prohibited. All tourists must register their visit within three days of arriving. All Italian hotels facilitate this process.
- Travelers may only bring up to five pets into Italy. The animals cannot be for sale and must be with an owner or other responsible party. All animals from other European countries must have a current veterinarian examination accompanied by a European Community Veterinarian Certificate. Pets from outside Europe need comparable documentation, such as the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection.
- Certain restrictions are placed on what items can freely enter and exit Italy with travelers. Only 400 cigarettes are allowed per traveler. Only two unopened wine bottles and one bottle of hard liquor are allowed. Tourists may only take home $500 in souvenirs. Importing and exporting items that exceed these restrictions incur extra fees.
