    • 1). Obtain a copy of your credit report from all three credit bureaus. You are entitled to a free report every year by going to AnnualCreditReport.com (See Resources for link). Look at the reports and see if there are negative accounts, incorrect information, or accounts that have not been updated recently. If you find a mistake, you can take steps to dispute the information by selecting "Contact Us" from the AnnualCreditReport.com home page.

    • 2). Get a personal loan to pay off all or a portion of your credit card debt. If you can pay off your credit cards or at least get the debt on each of them below 30 percent of the available credit, it will have a significant impact on your credit score.

    • 3). Pay your current bills on time and do not use your credit cards to make large purchases. Keep the balances on them low and pay off any new charges at the end of each month.

    • 4). Write to your creditor and ask for a "goodwill adjustment." If you have a fairly good track record with a lender, they may be willing to erase a late payment or two from your credit report.
