Diabetes Treatment for Cats

    Diet

    • Diets rich in protein with low carbohydrates may be particularly beneficial. There are several varieties of prescription diets available for diabetic cats, such as Hill's w/d and Purina Veterinary Diets DM.

    Exercise

    • Cats affected by diabetes many times are more on the obese side. A good exercise regimen along with a healthy diet can make diabetes much more controllable.

    Insulin

    • While diet and exercise may be helpful for some pets, many require insulin injections. These injections are given daily under the skin in order to effectively control the cat's diabetes.

    Checkups

    • Most cats will require a day of hospitalization to check their blood every two to four hours, along with home monitoring, to determine the amount of insulin to be given.

    Considerations

    • While the idea of administering daily injections may be daunting, veterinarians often schedule an insulin injection demonstration for diabetic cat owners. The great news is that cats gradually become accustomed to daily injections.
