If you are living on a very tight budget and need that shed to store children's large toys, garden tools and lawnmower, there are a number of ways to keep the cost low and still make a practical and attractive looking garden shed.
While searching for shed plans, give yourself plenty of time to learn how many of these seven tips you can apply and make your project affordable.
1.
Browse around in building supply stores for free or low cost shed-building plans, pamphlets and brochures.
They are usually found at the customer service area and along the isles.
These brochures give you not only the features of the products, but also their use and installation instructions for foundations, flooring, framing, roofing, etc.
2.
Look for left-over or even good used materials such as 2x4s and plywood.
These may be found in Kijiji ads, Craigslist ads or in used construction materials stores in Yellow pages.
You could also place wanted ads in Kijiji, Craigslist or local newspaper.
3.
Check the price and quality of different kinds of new materials.
Some kinds of wood are much lower priced and quite adequate for a garden shed.
Consider 2x3s instead 2x4s or particle board instead of plywood.
Look for an economy area to find reasonable quality studs, sheeting, shingles, etc.
4.
Tailor the dimensions of the shed, length and width, to match the standard size of sheeting, (4x8), to reduce the amount of waste.
Furthermore, if the sides are 6 1/2' high then seven foot studs would give less waste eight foot studs.
5.
Build the shed yourself and ask a family member or friend to help when needed.
You will be amazed at how much you can accomplish on your own and at how much money you will save.
6.
Buy good used hand and power tools if possible.
Browse through ads of garage sales, Kijiji and Craigslist.
You will be surprised at their quality at the fraction of the cost.
However, if you have to buy new, look for special sale prices in large stores and discount stores.
7.
Examine sheds already build and on display at large building supply stores.
Look at measurements such as distance between studs, size of door openings and height.
Decide whether or not you really need windows.
Also, look at the condition of the shed.
If it has been outside in sun, rain and snow for several years, see if it has deteriorated in roof or structure.
This can help you decide what kind of materials to use.
By careful planning and following these seven tips, you should be able to save a considerable amount of money and build an an adequate and attractive garden shed that you can be proud off.
Even if you purchase a set of shed plans, they can be modified and materials chosen to fit your budget.
Remember, a dollar saved is a dollar earned.
In the UK, make it a pound.
