How to Do a Carfax

    • 1). Ask the dealership salesperson to provide you with the Carfax report for the car you are considering. This method is the least expensive and most convenient way to get Carfax information. Many reputable car dealers gladly provide reports on the vehicles in their inventory to assure customers that the purchase they are considering is a sound one.

    • 2). Search the Carfax website for listings of cars with free Carfax reports. If you know what year range, make and model of vehicle you are interested in, Carfax offers the ability to search for cars that fit that description within a radius up to 200 miles from the ZIP code you provide. Click on any specific vehicle in the list for an immediate free Carfax report and dealership contact information.

    • 3). Pre-pay for a set number of Carfax reports if a free report is not available, or if you are buying from a private seller. Use the service when you are ready to make a purchase by entering the car's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the website. Many car shoppers don't only consider one car before buying. The Carfax service gives you the option of paying up front to access between one and five reports within 60 days.
