History

• The development of mobile technologies started in early 1910, when Lars Ericsson used very long wires to install a phone inside his car, enabling him to make phone calls wherever he went. Mobile technologies further progressed as mobile phones were introduced in luxury trains across Europe during the mid-1920s. However, mobile technologies were only fully realized during the 1950s, when the use of mobile phones became open to the general public. • Mobile phones or cellular phones are the most popular types of mobile technologies. Mobile phones enable people to call and send text messages to each other without using a dedicated landline. In recent years, smartphones have been developed to combine the power of the Internet and a graphic user interface (GUI), which is the basis of computer systems. Smartphones enable users to browse through various websites on the Internet using high-resolution touch screens for easier manipulation. • Netbooks, also known as the tablet personal computer, are laptop computers that are small and lightweight. These mini-computers are convenient to carry. Just like any other computer, netbooks run on a specific operating system that allows users to do the basic functions of a computer, such as creating Word files and browsing the Internet. Since netbooks are relatively small, their screen and keyboard size may prove to be very limiting to its users. However, netbooks can be highly flexible since they can connect to external monitors, bigger keyboards or a mouse to make using them a lot easier.

• GPS (Global Positioning System) devices enable users to determine a particular handset or object's exact location. In recent years, more and more mobile devices are equipped with GPS capabilities, since it is a great help in getting directions to a specific place or address. These devices have significantly improved location awareness capabilities and will serve for more advanced applications in the future.
